Gold Rush Expeditions, Inc. is proud to present the Historic Phillips Gold Mining Claim. This is a 20 acre lode mining claim for sale exclusively through Gold Rush Expeditions, Inc. The claim is located just outside of Weaverville, California and has been properly staked and marked at all corners. All Gold Rush Expeditions, Inc. claims have been meticulously surveyed, mapped and researched. Field work is completed by our own experienced, well versed Mine Survey Team.
The Phillips is a rare mine of its kind for the region. In an area known for its placer gold production, the lode mines are rare to find. They have either been filled in or locked down into parks and wilderness. There is excellent documentation of the history of the claim including a report on the reserves in the mine. There is visible gold in the mines and the 1979 report stated there is a minimum of 1600 tons of gold blocked out in reserves. Thats just over $1.9 Million dollars with gold valued at $1200 per ounce.
Historic reports state there are 5 adits cut at various heights on the claim. Our survey team only located 2 mine portals, one accessible, and one completely collapsed. The mines are located in the southern end of the Klamath range, outside of the Whiskeytown Rec area and receive very little traffic. The claim is set over Spring Gulch and when the creek is running it could likely be panned for some of the famous motherlode nuggets.
A good road runs from the highway, and a nice dirt road runs up to the mine from Douglas City. The road can get narrow in spots but is navigable in a full size vehicle as of 11/16. 4WD is recommended for a few steep inclines and crawling over some ruts. There is very limited room for parking or staging at the claim, but there are flats down by the creekbed that are recommended for camping and staging.
According to historic documents, there should be roughly 275' in underground workings at the mine. We only explored and documented less than 60' and found native gold in quartz in several spots. The claim is secluded and offers good privacy. Dont expect a lot of passersby, as the mine is on its own spur with nothing beyond it.
History of the Mines
A lode gold mine located west of Mikes Peak, along Spring Gulch, a tributary of Indian Creek, about 1,600 feet N of the Dixie Queen Mine. Mineralization is hosted in mica schist. The ore body is pockets, strikes NW and dips 90 (vertically), at a thickness of 0.91 meters. The country rock is cut in places by limestone dikes. Local rocks include schist of various types and ages. Workings include underground openings with an overall depth of 275 feet (91.44 meters). They are comprised of a series of adits, highest is 53 feet below the outcrop or 222 feet above the level of the creek. It is 160 feet long. The next adit lies 57 feet below at 130 feet long. The third adit is 100 feet lower and is 150 feet long. The lowest adit is 20 feet above the creek, and at distances of 67 feet and 122 feet from the portal, 2 raises are driven to the level above. Some work was done on the opposite side of the creek also. No production record was found. Production was an estimated 1,600 tons of ore valued at 2.25 ounces per ton(period values).
